Joutseno mill has a long history. Pulp has been produced on the banks of Lake Saimaa for almost a hundred years. The mill has been totally modernized at the turn of the century. The new fibre line started in 2001 making the mill the biggest single-line softwood pulp mill in the world. The new mill applies the best available technology (BAT) and is in efficiency and environmental management among the best in the world.

History
- 1908: Osakeyhtiö Pulp was founded
- 1909: production at the mill commenced; production was 6000 tonnes of unbleached pulp per year
- 1951: Joutseno-Pulp Osakeyhtiö was founded
- 1955: after the first extension project was completed, the production was 60 000 t/a of unbleached pulp
- 1962: after the second extension project was completed, production was 245 000 t/a of unbleached pulp
- 1984: as the bleaching plant went on stream, the mill started the production of fully bleached pulp
- 1997 Metsä-Botnia acquired Joutseno Pulp whose capacity was 320 000 t/a
- 1998 the new recovery line raised the capacity to 415 000 t/a
- 2001 the new fibre line went on stream, raising the capacity to 600 000 t/a
